By Lee Hsin-Yin

Taipei, Oct. 10 (CNA) The rate of dengue fever infection has been slowing down steadily in the southern Taiwan city of Tainan, the worst-hit area this year, the Centers for Disease Control said Saturday.

As of Friday, the number of dengue fever cases[1] in Taiwan since the start of summer in May had reached 22,520, an overnight increase of 340, according to CDC[2] data.

Tainan alone reported an increase of 199 cases from the previous day, amid[3] steady decline[4] over the past week, the CDC said.

In neighboring Kaohsiung City, however, infections have been increasing in a slightly faster speed.

On Friday, Kaohsiung saw an increase of 134 new cases, 22 more than a week ago, the agency said.

As of Friday, the two cities had reported 18,864 and 3,279 cases, respectively[5]. Together they accounted for[6] more than 98 percent of the national[7] total.

It also said 87.4 percent of the dengue patients throughout Taiwan have recovered from the disease, while 63 are currently being treated [8]in intensive care units[9], and 89 have succumbed to[10] the disease.
